A diet consisting of eight weeks of protein drinks and soup followed by a gradual incorporation of foods low in calories and high in protein may help people with knee osteoarthritis lose weight, which may lessen the pain in the joints and improve quality of life , as found in a new study.
addition, the researchers said that diet could also help people whose obesity problem makes it impossible to exercise.
Obese individuals with knee osteoarthritis should be urged to lose weight . The question that this study raises is whether patients can maintain the weight loss they achieve a formula based on calorie, during the time in real life.
For the study, 175 obese people with osteoarthritis of the knee were examined during the diet, where in the first 8 weeks should only eat soup and protein shakes limiting caloric intake to 800 per day. Thus, participants lost weight and also increased the bone mineral density.
For the next eight weeks, participants continued the diet but increased daily caloric intake to 1,200 per day, including foods high in protein and low in calories.
Weight loss helped more than 60 percent of participants reduce their knee pain and improve their ability to walk.
however, the real challenge is to maintain the weight loss over time.
